“I’m going to turn on the light, but don’t freak out, okay?”
“Why would I do that?” She lowered her voice instinctively. Something about this room made her want to whisper.
“Because there is a lot of bondage equipment attached to the bed and you said you were a virgin. I don’t want you to be afraid.”
“Maddox, I said I’m a club virgin. Not an actual virgin.” Julie’s face burned, and she was grateful for the near-darkness.
“I know, Julie.” His voice was full of warm humor, and it washed over her like summer rain. “I’m just teasing you. But it can be a bit overwhelming the first time you see it.”
“I’m a big girl. I can take it.”
His hand gave her shoulder a slight squeeze then a tiny caress. The gesture sent a shock wave of hot desire straight to her wet pussy. “I’m counting on that, Julie.”
He flipped on the wall switch, and although the lamps it turned on bathed the room in a soft red glow, it was enough light to illuminate a large four-poster bed to the left, with hooks and wheels and cuffs and chains attached to the end and under the canopy. Julie had never seen anything like it.
She blinked a few times, trying to take it all in. Then her gaze scanned the rest of the room. A sofa, a couple of armchairs, a dresser with nothing on top of it, and an oval full-length mirror in one corner. Thick drapes on the windows were drawn closed. A bench of some sort with two seats—one on top of the other, separated by the space of about two feet—and rings along the sides sat near the bed. Several odd-shaped pieces of furniture rested on a raised platform along one wall.
“People are expected to bring their own toys, lube, condoms, et cetera, but I have several rooms up here just like this one where special guests are allowed to come and play in private.”
“I see.” It was such a noncommittal thing to say, but she’d been rendered incapable of coherent thought. Every fantasy she’d ever had rose in her mind, and she tried to force them back, believing Maddox would somehow see them, too, if she gave them free rein, but they wouldn’t be restrained.
She saw herself on her hands and knees draped over one of those curved wedges, while Maddox fucked her from behind. Julie moaned softly and stepped away from Maddox’s touch further into the room. She walked slowly around the perimeter, her hand extended but not actually touching anything.
He followed at a discreet distance, but it was impossible to ignore his presence. He may as well have still been directly behind her with both hands on her shoulders. She was aware of his breathing, his scent, and the heat from his body.
“Any questions, Julie?” That voice…so warm and full of erotic promises. Had it always been that smooth and confident? It was difficult to remember. They’d had classes together in middle school and high school, and of course they’d been in the same grade in elementary school, but Maddox McCree had never been the kind of boy that girls like Julie Carruthers simply walked up to and started a conversation with.
“Too many.” That was the truth, at least. Sure, she’d read a lot about BDSM. In her profession she had to be comfortable discussing anything and everything. But reading about it or hearing your clients discuss it was very different than being face-to-face with a room full of apparatus.
“Shall I walk you around the room and explain everything?”
She turned to face him, convinced he was teasing her, but his expression was dead serious. It was a tempting offer, but she was so turned on right now that if he started talking about how each of these things were used, she was likely to make a complete damn fool of herself by asking him to demonstrate. “No, no that’s okay.”
“Well then, perhaps you could pick out the most intriguing thing in the room and allow me to explain only that?”
His gaze penetrated to her very core. He knew she wasn’t simply overwhelmed. He sensed her arousal. She was sure of it. It would be so easy to give in. Too damn easy. But what would happen in the morning? Or would they even get that far, especially when Maddox McCree discovered that Julie Carruthers was exactly what the rumors in high school said she was? A cold, frigid woman, incapable of losing herself in a sexual relationship?
It wasn’t like she hadn’t tried. Even getting out of Racy and going to school in Chicago hadn’t helped. She’d had no boyfriends in high school, and had been convinced she was the only virgin at Northwestern. She’d had exactly two relationships during her undergraduate years that had progressed to sex, and both of those had failed miserably when Julie couldn’t figure out how to relax enough to enjoy it.
Maddox moved closer to her, still watching her face carefully. “I’ve made you uncomfortable.”
She shook her head. “No, that isn’t it.” She stopped herself before she told him she had simply been lost in unpleasant memories. That would invite questions she had no intention of answering.
“Then what is it?”
How could she tell him this? She barely knew him. How could she tell him that she’d thought she was in love during her graduate studies but the man had turned out to be a cheating prick who’d used her and hurt her with her own inadequacies about sex? How could she tell him about losing her virginity in a frat house during her freshman year, only to find out the boy she’d allowed to take that precious prize had told all his frat brothers how she’d cried and been unable to let him finish?
A tear escaped before she could stop it. Julie brushed impatiently at it and tried to turn away from Maddox’s penetrating gaze, but it was too late. He’d spotted it. He pulled her into an embrace and just held her. It was nothing but a simple gesture one good friend might do for another, but it was more comforting and protective than anything he could possibly have done at that moment.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“You have nothing to apologize for.”
She leaned into his warm, muscular body and tried to stop the rest of the tears, but so many painful memories and strong emotions bubbled up that she couldn’t process them all. She was embarrassed and angry that she was crying in front of a virtual stranger. Julie simply didn’t lose control like this in public. Never. It was unprofessional.
“Julie, I never meant to make you cry.” God that voice! It was so warm and seductive. No wonder girls in high school had constantly surrounded him.
“You didn’t.” She pulled out of his embrace because if she didn’t get away from that hard, muscled body, she was going to do something that would absolutely guarantee a repeat of every shitty experience she’d ever had in college.
She dug in her purse for a tissue but of course there were none. Maddox went into the bathroom and returned with several, which he handed to her. She dabbed at her eyes, but now of course her damn makeup would be ruined, and she probably resembled a raccoon by now. “Thank you.”
He placed a hand on her arm, and she flinched as she’d done earlier downstairs, but not because she didn’t want to be touched. His skin was so warm it penetrated the thick fabric of her dress and sent a jolt of electricity straight to her throbbing clit.
“Let’s sit down for a moment while you catch your breath.”
He led her to the sofa and sat close to her—too close—but if she moved away he might think her rude. “Don’t you have to get back to the party?”
His grin was quick and easy. “The party will take care of itself, Julie. I’d rather be here with you right now.”
“Why?” Julie nearly clamped a hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry, Maddox. That was rude. I meant…I don’t understand why we’re up here. I don’t understand why…why you’re being so nice to me.”
A shadow of pain passed over his face, but it was gone so quickly that Julie wondered if it had been there at all. “Julie, this isn’t high school. I know I treated you like shit back then, and if it’s an apology you need, then you have it.”
He’d treated her like shit? That was news to her. He hadn’t treated her like anything. He’d completely ignored her. “Maddox, the only thing I remember about you
and me in high school was that we never spoke. If you treated me badly, I didn’t know about it.”
She watched several emotions cross his face, one of which was surprise. “All right. Glad we have that out of the way.” He scooted closer. “You asked me why I’m being so nice to you. I’m intrigued. And I can’t help but sense you want to know more about this lifestyle, but for some reason you’re afraid to ask.”
Well, that certainly hit the nail on the head. Maybe he should be the psychologist?
“What I can’t understand is why. Or why that would evoke such emotion that you’d be crying right now. Tell me what’s going through your head, Julie. I want to understand.”
She let out a sound that was a cross between a laugh and a sigh. “For a shrink, I’m doing a lousy job of keeping my emotions in check.”
“You’re not here as a shrink. You’re a guest in my house, and I’m fascinated by you.”
“You are fascinated by me?” Now she knew he was teasing her.
“Well, yes. You’re a beautiful woman, Julie. Surely you don’t need me to tell you that. And I also find you intriguing. You dress in a way that detracts attention from you, yet every fiber of your aura screams something else entirely.”
Holy shit. Had he just called her “beautiful”? And what was with his assessment of her wardrobe? Was he a mind reader, or was she that transparent?
“And since we’re on the subject…” He reached behind her and tugged on the elastic band that held her hair back. Gently, he pulled it down the length of her tresses as they came loose and cascaded over her shoulders. “There. That’s much better.”
Julie could barely take a full breath. No man had ever done anything like that to her—so simple yet so provocative. She felt as if she were drawn toward Maddox. If she let herself go, she would melt into him.
“You have lovely hair. You should wear it loose more often.”
She licked her lips, unsure what to do or say. It was obvious he was trying to seduce her. “Trying” wasn’t exactly the right word. If the truth be told, he’d already done so. All that was needed was her acquiescence. But what would be the point? It would only end in the same way as every other sexual experience she’d had. No. She couldn't do that. Not here in Racy. Not with someone whom she’d known since kindergarten.
Julie was about to rise from the sofa when Maddox cupped her face and stared into her eyes with so much intensity that her heart fluttered. She couldn’t move. Those dark eyes locked on hers and rendered her limbs incapable of motion.
When he bent his head and kissed her, fireworks exploded in her head and a surprised moan escaped her throat. His full lips moved over hers in ways she’d never imagined a mouth could move, and she had no choice but to part her lips and let his tongue inside. Nothing else would quench the fire burning in her body.
Chapter Three
Maddox McCree knew how to kiss. Julie was lost in a sea of erotic images dancing through her head and unfamiliar sensations coursing through her body. She wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders and threw one thigh over his before she even realized what she was doing.
As his tongue continued its luscious assault inside her mouth, she started to remove her leg from his only to moan into his open mouth when his hand clamped around her ankle. He removed her shoe, and Julie lost all sense of time and place. He released her mouth and nuzzled her neck. She couldn’t stop the loud moans bubbling up inside her.
Her nipples tingled and her clit throbbed. What was she doing? She didn’t care. She only wanted it to continue. Maddox planted tiny nips along her jaw line as he lifted her other leg onto his lap and removed the shoe from that foot as well. Then he simply lifted her hips and pulled her onto his lap as if she weighed no more than a book.
His erection pressed into her left hip, and her breath caught in her throat as pictures of what that dick might look like raced through her mind. This was insane. She should stop this now before it went any further. What must he think of her?
“Julie…I want to make love to you.”
Oh my God. “Maddox…I…” She what? She had no fucking idea what to say. What was she doing?
“Just say ‘yes,’” he whispered. “One little word.”
Julie swallowed hard against the sudden lump in her throat. It couldn’t be that easy. Sex had never been that easy. And if she gave in to the raging wild abandon inside her struggling to break free, it would only end in embarrassment. And this time the man would be a local whom she’d known for thirty years, not some kid in college that she’d never see again.
Maddox pulled her close and began to kiss her neck. What was it about his mouth that drove her to distraction? She sighed in his arms and inhaled his warm, musky scent. When he stroked her back, she forgot all about possible future embarrassment and reached up to tangle her fingers in his hair. Its silky softness surprised her. He wore it just long enough to give him a roguish look, like a pirate or one of those romance novel models from the 1970s.
He gazed into her eyes. “My room is just down the hall. What’s your answer, Julie?”
Yes. Just say yes!
“Julie, I won’t ask for anything you aren’t ready to give me. But you intrigue me, and I'm very attracted to you. I know you want me too. I can feel it in your touch, and I can see it in your eyes. Please just give me one night. I won’t ask for anything else.”
One night. She could do that, couldn’t she? Julie had never had a one-night stand in her entire life. Then again, this was a small town. What if he bragged? Or worse, what if he told the truth? That Julie Carruthers was as cold as ice in bed?
“I promise you discretion, if that’s what you’re worried about. No one in Racy will know that you spent the night with me. I swear it.”
She studied his face—the set of his jaw, the muscles in his cheeks, and the movements of his eyes. It’s what she’d been trained to do, after all. She always knew when her clients weren’t being truthful with her. Maddox wasn’t lying. He meant what he said.
She took a deep breath and nodded. “Yes. Okay. Yes.”
“Thank you,” he whispered, kissing her briefly again. When he released the kiss, he picked her up and set her on her feet. He gave her a tender, grateful look that confused her. Surely Maddox McCree didn’t have trouble finding women who would fuck him? He picked up her shoes and handed them to her. “Come with me.”
The room he led her to was as richly appointed as the rest of the house, tucked back into the far corner at the end of the hallway. It smelled of sage and leather, and while his large bed had some equipment attached to it, it was less intimidating than the other bed had been.
“Do you need to use the bathroom? I’m going to slip out for a moment and grab some water for us.”
“Thank you.” He was a gentleman—she’d give him that much. She didn’t take too long in the bathroom because she knew if she did, she’d chicken out. This was the boldest, most decadent thing she’d ever done in her entire life. The possibility filled her with energy, like the very air in the room was suddenly charged, and lightning would strike any moment.
When Maddox returned, he placed several bottles of water on the nightstand and then held out his arms. “Come here, Julie.”
She obeyed, every nerve ending on fire as she walked toward him. Could she really do this? She wanted to so badly, and that realization shocked her. She’d rarely seen Maddox around town, and although she and almost every other girl in school had drooled over him, it wasn’t as if she’d spent the last seventeen years fantasizing about him. Then again, if she were being honest, she’d done a fair amount of fantasizing about him, but not everyday. What was it about him that had drawn her in tonight and allowed her to let down her guard to reach this point?
He gathered her into his arms and pulled her close, eliciting a soft moan from her throat. She inhaled his scent and tried to free her mind of the swirling mass of self-doubt and confusion. She spent her days teaching her clients visualization techniques to help t
hem relax. Too bad she couldn’t take her own advice right now.
“You’re tense. Turn around.”
A shiver ran over her at the sound of his voice. She did as he asked, and when he began to massage her shoulders, Julie groaned out loud. His practiced hands found the knotted trigger points in seconds and worked to loosen the tight muscles, until tiny waves of tingling pleasure coursed down her spine and out to her limbs.
“Is that better?” he asked softly.
“Yes. Thank you.”
He wrapped his arms around her from behind and pressed against her. Even through the leather pants she could feel his erection, huge and rock hard. Julie moaned. Maddox’s lips nuzzled her neck, sending jolts of pleasure along the same pathways he’d just massaged into relaxation. Her clit began to throb again, and the thought she might have an orgasm tonight bubbled up inside her, forcing a squeak of delight from her throat.
“Is something funny?”
“No, no. Not at all. I wasn’t laughing.”
“Tell me what you’re thinking right now, Julie.”
She turned in his arms and looked into his eyes, desperate for some shred of truth in them. It would sound like she was fishing for compliments if she asked why she was here, but she seriously wanted to know. He had a house full of other women downstairs. Surely he could have his pick?
When he bent his head and kissed her, she pushed all thoughts of his sexual prowess aside and relaxed in his strong arms. He stroked her hair and back as his lips and tongue moved over hers. Julie pressed closer, loving the cool feel of leather against her body. When he unzipped her dress, a moment of panic ensued, but she mentally shook it away. She was going to do this, and she was going to enjoy it. She wanted this man more than she could remember wanting anyone. Much more.
He let it fall to the ground and brushed his hands over her full-length slip, and then he eased the straps over her shoulders and let the slip fall as well. Her mouth was on fire from his kiss. She couldn’t stop moving her lips and tongue over his, trying to imitate him. No one had ever kissed her like this or undressed her with such unhurried, delicate movements.
