  A Touch of Sin

ICU nurse Savannah Patterson has no problem dating three men at the same time. She begins a whirlwind romance with her high school boyfriend Jimmie James, the preacher’s son, as well as respiratory therapist Noah Kirkland. When Dr. Ethan Drake comes into the mix, he brings the added excitement of BDSM play to their dynamic.

Noah and Jimmie both have had a thing for Savannah since grade school, but Savannah never dated anyone for more than a few weeks. Once Ethan comes into the picture, they have no problems sharing her with him. Ethan is only too happy to share her, as he’s had secret fantasies of doing just that for years.

Jimmie’s relationship with his father has never been a solid one. When Jimmie has a breakthrough and remembers the details surrounding his mother’s death seventeen years ago, he realizes his own father was involved. The four are now in more danger than they bargained for.

  Chapter One

Savannah Patterson had no idea how she’d allowed herself to get into such a pickle, but she wasn’t about to turn down a dinner invitation from the elusive and very hot Dr. Ethan Drake. The fact that she’d been dating Noah Kirkwood for two months, and had finally gotten back together again three months ago with one of her high school boyfriends, Jimmie James, was totally beside the point.

It was also irrelevant, as far as Savannah was concerned, that her Great Aunt Ruthie had invited all three men to her annual Babe Ruth Day picnic in seventeen days. Aunt Ruthie held this event every year in her backyard, and it had nothing to do with baseball. At least, not in her mind. She knew what the day was supposed to commemorate. But since it also fell on her birthday, April twenty-seventh, she had decided years ago to hold her own Babe Ruth Day. After all, when her husband, Don, was still alive, that was what he’d always called her. Babe Ruth.

She normally invited most of the town of Sin anyway, and since she still volunteered at Sin Hospital, the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and everyone else within shouting distance also received an invite. Most folks liked to gossip about the fact that Aunt Ruthie’s annual picnic was more popular than either the First Baptist Church or Lost Bridge Road Church of Christ picnics. Savannah reflected that was probably because Aunt Ruthie served plenty of whiskey at her picnic.

As she dressed for dinner in Nashville with the dashing Dr. Ethan Drake, second year trauma surgeon fellow at Sin Hospital where she had worked in the ICU for the past eight years, she wondered what turn of events had transpired that caused the doc to finally ask her out. If rumors in the ICU were to be believed, and approximately seventy-five percent of them could be, he’d rarely dated anyone in Sin since his arrival last year to begin his fellowship. His past life and his current life were both as mysterious as Hidden Lake in Nashville.

But he was soft-spoken, hotter than Murfreesboro in August, and one hell of a great trauma surgeon. So Savannah had agreed to have dinner with him.

She put on her new summer dress, and a short jacket over it since it was only April and not quite warm enough in the evenings for sleeveless. She also had a brand-new pedicure so she wore new sandals, and even had earrings that matched the yellow chiffon of the dress.

The dress was a Diane Von Furstenberg knock-off she’d found at the outlet mall in Lebanon, and she adored the way it fell against her body. Plus the color was perfect with her blonde hair and blue eyes. If Dr. Gorgeous wasn’t all over her by the end of the evening, Savannah would be disappointed.

He arrived at her home five minutes early, and Savannah was ready. “Hi
there. You look wonderful.” He did indeed. He wore a perfect suit that was light enough for warmer weather, but not so formal she felt underdressed. He smelled incredible, and she wanted to run her fingers through his dark hair. In the evening light, his blue eyes looked like sapphires.

“Um…so do you. Wow. Turn around. Let’s have a look.”

Savannah grinned, and then twirled slowly.

  “Is that Furstenberg?”

Her eyes widened. “It’s a knock-off, but tell me why you know designers.”

He laughed, soft and easy. “My sister is a buyer for Saks in New York. You have no idea the endless e-mails I have to endure, complete with pictures.”

She linked her arm in his as they descended the front steps toward his Porsche. “Is that where you’re from?” No one knew.

  He shook his head. “Jersey.”

  “As in New Jersey?”

He opened the passenger door and gave her a grin that sent a gush of wetness to her pussy. “Yes. Sorry. I’ve been gone for years but I still speak like I’m there, don’t I?”

“Well, we all guessed it was East Coast, but no one was entirely sure where.”

He slid into the driver’s seat and glanced at her sideways. “Now you know my deep, dark secret. What will you do with it?”

His gaze traveled down to where the fold at the bottom of her dress had fallen open, exposing her thighs about halfway up. Savannah didn’t cover her legs. Instead, she held his gaze steady. “I’ll take it to my grave.”

He shook his head slightly as if he’d zoned out for a second, and then he backed out of the driveway. “It’s not that important, is it? I mean not being from here?”

“Everyone knew you weren’t from here the moment you spoke.”

He laughed again. “Touché. Four years at Vandy and five years in Ohio didn’t kill the accent I guess.”

“Not even close. So, Vandy, eh? Great med school.”

  “The best.”

“Did you do your residency in Ohio then?”

“Yes. In Cleveland, at MetroHealth Medical Center.”

She nodded, having no clue about that hospital other than hearing the name a few times in her nursing career. “And now you’re here. What do you think of Sin?”

He grinned again. “The hospital, the town, or the concept?”

Oh my! “Let’s start with the town and work our way forward.”

Was that a soft moan she’d just heard? “I like the town. I really do. Jersey is so big, noisy, and dirty. I can hear the crickets at night here, and the stars are beautiful.”

“I agree.” She shifted in her seat to face him as they made their way onto Interstate 24. “Where in New Jersey are you from?”

“Alpine. It’s on the Hudson across from Yonkers.”

“And now the hospital. It must seem very small town compared to Vandy and MetroHealth.”

  “Are you familiar with MetroHealth?”

  “Only by reputation.”

“I wanted a change of pace which is why I jumped at the chance here. And taking care of people who have been hurt is the same everywhere.”

“Do you plan on staying, or will you go somewhere else to become an attending? Or do you plan on going into private practice?”

He cocked his head to one side. “I’m not sure yet.” Then he gave her legs another glance. “Depends on whether or not I find a reason to stay.”

Holy shit. “Okay. Now the big question. Sin, the concept. What does the elusive Dr. Drake think of that?”

He laughed again, but this time she caught the undercurrent of nervousness. “Is that what people think of me? That I’m elusive?”

He hadn’t answered the question, but she let that go for now. “Yes.”

  “I have kept to myself, haven’t I?”

“Ah, unless the gossip mill at that hospital has fallen apart, and I seriously doubt it has, I’m the first woman you’ve asked out on a date in six months. What’s up with that?”

He looked surprised now. “Are you sure you’re from here? You’re very direct.”

“Who told you Southern women aren’t direct?”

  “People in Jersey.”

This time she laughed. “Well, they are so wrong.”

“Sin is a small town. Let’s just say I’m cautious.”

“Okay. I get that. We live our lives in a fish bowl here. But you didn’t answer my question.”

He frowned. “Which one did I miss?”

“The one about the concept of sin.”

“Oh. Gotcha.” He navigated the heavy traffic quite well as they approached downtown Nashville. Certainly better than most people she’d watched drive this stretch of freeway. “Well, let’s just say my ideas about sin most likely wouldn’t be welcome inside either church in town, and leave it at that.”

She squirmed in her seat as lust raced through her body. She’d known there was fire in this man. Had seen it the moment she’d first looked into those smoky blue eyes. “You might be surprised about some of the folks in town who spend most of their time in those churches.”

  “Oh? Anyone in particular?”

His eyes twinkled with amusement, and Savannah wondered who he’d been talking to, or listening to. “You know a secret. Spill it, Dr. Drake.”

He laughed loudly. “Oh, I like you. You don’t take any shit from anyone, and nothing gets past you.” He cast a quick, appreciative glance her way. “You’d fit in well on the East Coast.”

“No, thank you. Too many people for my taste. And you are very good at avoiding answering direct questions.”

“Yes, I suppose I am. I don’t know any secrets. Honestly. I was merely curious about who is secretly sinning.” He winked at her, and she had to bite back a moan. Working side-by-side with this man for nearly two years had kept her fantasies fueled, but outside of work he was far more relaxed and charming than she’d ever imagined.

“Here we are.” He pulled into the parking lot behind Stock Yard restaurant and Savannah fought the urge to squeal. She’d always wanted to come here but it was way out of her budget. He held out his arm as they made their way around the front, and as she curled her hand around it, she pretended they did this all the time.

Inside, she inhaled the heavenly scents and took in the rich wallpaper and gleaming woodwork. Yeah. She could get used to this. They had a table overlooking the bike trail and the Cumberland River beyond it. As she glanced at the menu, she was overwhelmed with the choices. She closed hers. “Will you order for me? Too many yummy choices.”

“I’d be delighted to order for you.” He ordered a bottle of wine in perfect French, and then crab cakes and oysters for an appetizer. “Have you ever had them?”

“Crab cakes, yes. From Puleo’s in Murfreesboro. Oysters, never.”

  “You’ll love them.”

She fought the urge to slip off one sandal and run her bare foot up his pant leg. “They’re supposed to be an aphrodisiac. Are you trying to get me into bed, Dr. Drake?”

He was saved from having to answer because their wine arrived. She got a kick out of watching him taste it, and wondered if he would address her question or ignore it. When the server was gone again, he lifted his glass. She did the same, holding his gaze.

“To getting you into bed,” he said softly.

Savannah chuckled as heat rose to her face. She really enjoyed a man who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind or be honest. “And to sin. The concept.” She clinked her glass against his and then made a sound of appreciation when she tasted the wine. “Wow.”

  “I’m pleased you like it.”

“So, okay. I don’t get it. Good-looking, rich, fine taste in wine and food… Why do you never date? Are you secretly married?”

“No, I’m not married.” He placed his wine glass on the table, took hers and did the same, and then grasped her hands. His skin was warm, and the touch sent tiny jolts of electricity straight to her groin. “I’m picky, Savannah. That’s the best excuse I can give you. But I do have
a couple of questions for you, now that I have your attention and your hands.”

He gave them a little squeeze, but it was more the tone in his voice that sent her thoughts racing toward dark rooms and sweaty, naked bodies. “All right.”

“You spoke about the gossip mill in the hospital earlier. So, is it true you’re dating Noah Kirkland, as in the respiratory therapist Noah Kirkland?”

  “Yes.”

He looked surprised again. “Thank you for being honest.”

“I don’t lie to people, Ethan. I don’t believe in it. I’m also dating Jimmie James, the First Baptist Church pastor’s son. Do you know him?”

“I know of him, poor guy. Did his parents really name him James James?”

She laughed. “No, they really named him Jimmie James. It says Jimmie on his birth certificate.”

He shook his head. “That is freaking weird.”

She shrugged slightly. “You’re in the South, doc.”

“All right. Are you also sleeping with them both?”

  “Not yet.”

He released her hands as their appetizers arrived. Their server asked if they wanted to wait to order their entrees, but Ethan went ahead and ordered a signature salad for each of them, and then sea bass and seafood stuffed chicken. “We can share the entrees,” he said, with a wink.

When their server retreated once more, he picked up an oyster and told her to open her mouth. “It’s best to swallow it quickly without thinking too much.”

Oh Jesus. She did, and then she sighed softly “Delicious. I had no idea.”

  “You swallow quite well.”

  “Yes, I do.”

He stared into her eyes, his gaze a combination of lust and amusement. “Savannah, are you flirting with me?”
