  Chapter One

  Giselle Macey watched the objects of her unrelenting fantasies, Kade Durante and Elliot Raleigh, guide a couple of visitors in suits through the section of Phoebe’s Playthings where she sat all day, making floggers. Braiding each one by hand was painstaking work, but she’d been cross-stitching, sewing, and hooking rugs from the age of five. Her mother, Laila, had taught her to do both. Working with thicker materials such as deerskin or rubber was a challenge, but Giselle was thrilled to have this job.

  They paid her far better than her parents could to work for them in their bar and restaurant in town, Lady of The Night. And the view here, although not the palm trees and the distant ocean view in town, was still quite inspiring. Every few seconds she glanced at the two men from under her lashes, admiring the muscles their polo shirts and khaki shorts showed off. Even the executives at Phoebe’s Playthings dressed casually, which made the two men in suits stand out even more.

  Kade laughed at something, showing dazzling white teeth that contrasted nicely with his tanned skin and dark hair. He had the same unusual gray eyes as all his Durante cousins, and she loved the Taino design tats on his forearms and left calf. A fine dusting of dark hair covered both, and she’d often fantasized about rubbing her nipples across the hair she imagined was all over his body. She had no idea what he looked like naked, of course, but her mind had filled in the blanks often enough.

  “What are you working on?”

  Giselle rolled her eyes as her musings were unceremoniously interrupted by the whiny tones from her boss, Norm Antonio. She glanced up, struck as always by the man’s pasty skin. How could anyone living on an island in the Gulf of Mexico be so freaking pale? Did the man never go outside? His history both on Sybaris Cove and as the day-shift supervisor in her section were riddled with speculation. No one knew his real story, and that made everyone suspicious of him. His ferret eyes and lecherous grin only added to the rumors.

  “It’s kangaroo leather.”

  “I can see that.”

  Then why did you ask?

  He picked up the flogger she’d placed in the bin next to her station earlier. She’d finished it late in the afternoon yesterday, just before her shift ended, and taken one final look at it this morning. It was now ready to move to an inspection team before being shipped out. From the way he handled it, like it would break at his touch, she had to force back a laugh as she tried to imagine him throwing one. Not a chance. He almost looked like he was afraid of it.

  “Thanks.” She didn’t need or want his approval. She’d landed this job because Asa Durante and Tim Raleigh, the current CEOs of Phoebe’s Playthings, were long-time friends with her parents. The men came into the bar all the time, and as soon as Kade and Elliot were legally old enough to drink, they’d often joined them. When she cross-stitched a large silk flag for her parents to display, featuring the flower for which the bar was named, Asa, Tim, Kade, and Elliot had admired it each time they came in.

  One day, Kade and Elliot asked Giselle if she’d like to use her skills making custom floggers, and she’d jumped at the chance to work for Phoebe’s Playthings. Without this business, the town wouldn’t exist. And when she found out she’d be working in Kade and Elliot’s department, her fantasies had taken on a new dimension.

  Norm picked up the other flogger in the bin, but she ignored him and returned to watching Elliot and Kade. Elliot’s blond hair and blue eyes contrasted with Kade’s darker looks, but he was no less stunning than Kade. The two were distant cousins, as were all the Durantes and Raleighs, and most of the family members held top positions in the company. Their history was convoluted and strange, but Giselle didn’t like to dwell on it too often. Thinking about the ancient curse on both families gave her the creeps.

  No one knew where it had come from or who had placed it on their ancestors, William and Robert Raleigh and Iago and Agapito Durante. In essence, any male descendants of the four who tried to leave the island died before they reached the mainland. Now, the male Raleighs and Durantes didn’t even risk it.

  “This one has a mistake.”

  “What?” Giselle frowned at her boss, upset that once again his voice pulled her out of her reverie. “What mistake?” She never made mistakes. Braiding these floggers was something she could do in her sleep, plus she had a head for fine details.

  Norm held up the buffalo-hide flogger she’d worked on all morning. It was a custom order, as were all the floggers she made, and featured three colors of dyed leather. Bright purple, dark blue, and black. She loved the combination of colors, and had to work slower than usual while making it because the customer had a very specific pattern he wanted woven into the handle. Since he hadn’t specified a date he wanted it, she’d worked on it a bit each day this week, getting the design just right.

  “The design is off.”

  Because he was watching her, she resisted the urge to roll her eyes again. “No, it’s not.” She put down the flogger she was working on and rummaged through her printed orders, pulling out her copy of the sheet the customer had e-mailed with a picture of the design he wanted. “See? It’s a Mayan symbol, and it only looks unbalanced because the symbol itself is. But if you hold the handle next to this paper, you’ll see the designs are identical.”

  The flogger had a tag attached to it with the same design, but she’d purposefully not pointed out the obvious to him because this way he looked even stupider not to have noticed that himself.

  He held up the paper and flogger side-by-side, and this time Giselle had to bite her tongue to keep from laughing. She caught movement out of the corner of her eye and stood, smoothing down her work smock with one hand as Elliot, Kade, and the two stuffy-looking visitors in suits approached her work station.

  Norm puffed out his chest, shoved the paper back toward Giselle, and held up the flogger. “Mr. Raleigh…Mr. Durante…I was just telling Giselle how magnificent this bullhide flogger is. It’s an Aztec symbol, and she’s captured it perfectly.”

  Kade cut his gaze toward her briefly, and if he wasn’t about to laugh as well, Giselle would eat the flogger she was working on. Elliot merely looked bored. If it wouldn’t have been the most inappropriate thing in the world to do, she would have kissed them both, right then and there. They saw right through Norm’s bullshit. She knew that already. But to have them silently acknowledge that in front of him and the visitors made her heart soar.

  “Yes,” said Elliot, “she’s a genius with weaving designs out of any material. That’s why we hired her. But the symbol is Mayan, not Aztec. It means fire.”

  Norm looked like someone had just kicked him in the groin. “Oh…right. That’s what I meant. Mayan. Yes. And fire, you say? The colors are wrong. Shouldn’t they be more vibrant?”

  Kade glanced at the tag then shrugged. “The customer specified these particular colors.”

  Elliot smiled at Giselle, and her pussy grew wet. “These gentlemen are buyers from New York for a fetish shop in Chelsea, and they’re here to tour our facilities today. This is Giselle Macey, one of our custom flogger designers. Giselle, this is Dean Weller and Paolo Greco.”

  She shook hands with both men, but her attention was focused on Elliot’s handsome face. Those chiseled features had invaded her dreams so often, she felt certain she could outline them with her eyes closed.

  Norm actually cleared his throat, and this time Kade winked at her. Giselle couldn’t stop staring at him as Elliot introduced Norm to the men, then took the flogger from Norm. He stepped back and threw it a couple of times, and Giselle had to suppress a moan as she imagined him using that thing on her. She caught Kade’s thoughtful look as heat rushed to her face. He’d seen her reaction. It was difficult not to ask him to use her body as a demonstration for the visitors.

  “This is nice. Great balance in the handle.” He handed it to Kade. “Want to give it a try?”

  Kade kept his gaze on her as he took the flogger from Elliot, and she took several deep breaths to stop the fluttering in her heart. He threw it a few times, and Giselle watched, mesmerized by the easy graceful movements of his wrist. “It’s beautiful.” His voice was almost reverent. She’d have dreams of being bent over and tied down all night now, while both of them flogged her, then fucked her six ways to Sunday.

  He handed the flogger back to Elliot, who returned it to the bin. “Keep up the good work, Giselle.”

  “I will, Mr. Durante. Thank you.”

  Kade’s eyes bored into hers for a lingering moment before the group left her station, and then she admired his and Elliot’s perfect asses as they walked on. When she realized Norm was still there, she glanced at him. “Anything else? If not, I’ll get back to work.”

  He glared at Giselle for a few seconds, but she didn’t give a shit. She’d done nothing wrong. If he’d looked like an ass just now, it was because he’d brought that on himself. She took her seat, picked up her flogger, and went back to work without another glance at her officious boss.

  He was constantly trying to gain recognition like that, and again she wondered how the hell he’d landed a supervisor’s job. The man didn’t supervise anything. He strutted around like a peacock and knew next to nothing about the products she or her coworkers made.

  Was he sleeping with someone higher up? That seemed unlikely. What woman in her right mind would fuck him?

  He finally left her side and she watched him wander from station to station. Even his walk was pretentious, as though he were lord and master over his little kingdom. If he was in someone’s back pocket, she had to be desperate to want to be with a man like him.

  Scandals between employees and members of the Durante or Raleigh family weren’t unheard of inside the company. Both families had acquired the land on this island by exploiting the original inhabitants, who were themselves escaped convicts from various Caribbean islands. They’d come here to hide out, and the story was that they began fighting among themselves.

  But it wasn’t until the four ancestors of the current Durantes and Raleighs renamed the island Sybaris Cove and used the inhabitants to further their illegal activities and debauchery that things got really dicey and someone cursed the four and their male descendants.

  But in 1979, Daniel Raleigh and Emilio Durante started a legit mail-order business that grew into Phoebe’s Playthings. The company was now the rival of other fetish businesses all over the USA, and it wasn’t unusual for employees or outsiders to try and extort money from Asa and Tim, using w
hatever means necessary. They’d survived several hostile takeover attempts, and the current generation of Durante and Raleigh men had so far escaped the personal scandals that had plagued some of their more notorious ancestors.

  But one recent incident that involved one of the Raleigh women had circulated around the building. Taj Durante and Jeff Raleigh, third or fourth cousins to Kade and Elliot, had become involved with one of the vice presidents in sales, Alaina Pembrooke. Her boss was Sallyanne Raleigh, Jeff’s sister and Tim’s niece. Even though Sallyanne was rumored to be as much of a screwup as Norm, her uncle apparently overlooked a lot.

  She’d been involved in a secret fling with Alex Nesfield, an employee in the shipping department that Taj and Jeff ran. That same man used to date Alaina when the two lived in California. He was a screwup as well, and Alaina finally had him fired after Sallyanne had blamed her for an order being sent out incorrectly to a major client. Alex had then used Sallyanne to try and take revenge on Alaina, Taj, Jeff, and the entire company. From what Giselle had heard, the incident escalated into an attempted kidnapping, and Alex had been shot.

  Tim and Asa had sent out a company memo reminding everyone of the confidentiality agreement they’d all signed when hired on, and urging employees not to speculate or gossip about the incident. They worked hard to keep stuff like that away from the media as much as possible. The island had Internet access, of course, so that meant even though they were approximately one hundred miles off the coast of Louisiana, and the only access to the island was by small plane or boat, the world knew everything that went on there.
