The Doms of Sybaris Cove 9

  Midnight Fantasy

Doms Javier Durante and Garrett Raleigh each dated Renata Fontanette before she left for college, but she never planned to return. Her plans changed, and now Renata is back and working at Phoebe’s Playthings. The men are only too happy to pursue her again.

But their first outing with her reveals disturbing news. A Santeria practitioner has come to Sybaris Cove to help lift the curse on the Raleigh and Durante families. But there’s a catch. A descendant of Faith Fontanette, the woman who was sacrificed as a boon when the original curse was cast, must die. Renata is Faith’s only living descendant.

When the moment comes to summon the demons and ask for the curse to be lifted, Javier and Garrett offer an alternative solution. They would rather be cursed for eternity than give up the woman they love.

Will it be good enough to finally end the curse, or have they sealed the fate of both families forever?

  Chapter One

Renata Fontanette had been working at Phoebe’s Playthings in research and development, alongside former boyfriend Garrett Raleigh for six weeks now, and today was the day she was going to swallow her fear and ask him out. She didn’t care if he was technically her boss. They had dated in high school, and she’d never gotten over him. If rumors were to be believed, he still had a thing for her as well, despite his short-lived marriage while she was earning her doctorate in biomechanical engineering in Birmingham.

She’d also dated Javier Durante, but he hadn’t married someone else while she was in college. He, too, worked at Phoebe’s Playthings, as did most of the Durantes and Raleighs, but he was now an assistant vice president of sales, so she didn’t see him at work very often. R&D was tucked into a corner of the building, and most people forgot they were still there.

She was willing to forgive and forget Garrett’s transgression because they hadn’t parted on perfect terms, and she’d left him with no reason to believe she expected him to be waiting if and when she returned to Sybaris Cove one day. She’d earned her degree last spring and had then spent seven months working for a medical supply manufacturer in Texas, hating every second of it. But now she was back home.

She’d missed this island in the Gulf of Mexico. She’d missed her family and friends, and she’d missed Garrett and Javier. It was the kiss of death for any woman to date a Durante or Raleigh unless they never planned on leaving the island, because none of the male descendants of William and Robert Raleigh or Iago and Agapito Durante could leave it. They were under a curse, and if they tried to leave, they died.

“Hey, Renata.” Garrett’s voice snapped her out of her daydreams, and she glanced up into his gorgeous face. She swore the man hadn’t aged since high school. “Did you hear about the meeting at Asa’s house this Friday night?”

“No. What meeting?” Asa Durante was one of two current CEOs of Phoebe’s Playthings. His father, Emilio, together with Daniel Raleigh, had started Phoebe’s Playthings in 1979. Tim Raleigh, Daniel’s son, was the other CEO, but rumor had it that most of the department heads went to Asa when they needed something.

“Do you know who Petra Trudeaux is?”

“I remember Phyllis Trudeaux and her granddaughter, Nita. Any relation?”

“Petra and Nita are cousins, and Petra is a voodoo priestess, like Phyllis. She moved here a few weeks ago from St. Croix, and she believes she can lift the curse. She asked all the Durantes and Raleighs to come to this meeting so she can outline
her plan.”

Renata grinned. “And Asa agreed to host it?”

“Yeah, well, his house is the only one big enough to hold that many people in one room.”

“Haven’t you all tried to lift it before? What makes this time so different?”

Garrett pulled a chair over and scooted closer to her. She caught a whiff of his cologne and bit her lip to try and tamp down her hormones. He still had the most beautiful blue eyes she’d ever seen, and his hair was still just as blond as she remembered. His features were a bit more angular now, but that only served to make him more good looking.

“I guess you haven’t heard everything going on here with Shona’s diary and the clues we all have about the curse.”

  “The diary your brother has?”

  “Yes. That’s the one.”

  “Refresh my memory about Shona.”

He grinned, and her pussy grew wet. “You never paid attention to my family tree. That hasn’t changed, has it?”

“Not true. I know that your brother’s name is Graham, and your father is Charles.”

“Okay, smart-ass. Shona Durante was one of Iago’s daughters, and my maternal grandmother. She kept a diary about the curse from the time she was about ten. All the stories her father told her, all the clues she heard about, and everything else she discovered about it.”

“Why is it so significant now?”

“Because this is the first time all of us pooled our clues, and it turns out her dairy was the key to everything.”

“And you guys never knew that?”

He shook his head. “Nope. Do you know Javier’s boss, Alaina Pembrooke? She runs sales now, along with Mark Raleigh.”

Renata nodded. “I remember Mark, but not Alaina.”

“Alaina wasn’t born here. She’s from California and went to Pepperdine. She sent all the clues plus the diary to a friend of hers there. This professor unlocked the mixed-up dialects in the clues and used the diary to connect the dots. She translated everything, and she knows who summoned the demon who cast the curse, and which demons were recruited as helpers to maintain it. She also identified several loa that our great-grandfathers and grandfathers called on to help them lift it, without success. Their names are all over the documents and the clues we have.”

Renata coughed to cover up a laugh. “Seriously? Demons and loa? Asa has bought into all this, and is allowing a voodoo priestess to run a meeting at his house? A meeting during which she will reveal to all of you how the curse can be lifted?”

Garrett frowned, but his eyes were full of humor. “It does sound far-fetched, doesn’t it.”

“For Asa it does.” She leaned back and crossed one ankle over the opposite knee, thankful she’d worn her sexiest jeans today. Let him get a good, long look at what he’d been missing all these years.

“Well, it’s farther than we’ve come before.”

“Oh, I agree it certainly sounds that way. And I really do hope it works. I’m just surprised to hear you say Asa is on board with this. From what I remember, he was always pretty skeptical about the curse.”

“He still is, but he’s developed a soft spot for Alaina. She asked if he would lend his home for this meeting, and that was that. And, you haven’t heard what happened twice now.”

She leaned forward, hoping for some juicy gossip. There had never been a shortage of that on the island. “What?”

“You heard about the hurricane, right?”

She nodded. “It was in August, right?”

“Yep. So, after that storm, the surge unearthed some coffins on the western edge of the island, and a group of teens found them and tried to dig up a few more and float them all out to sea as a sick joke.”

“Oh, wonderful. Nice to know our youth are so busy with worthwhile projects.”

“Right. So while they were desecrating the dead, three of the kids got stuck in storm drains, and the cops didn’t have enough people to dive under there and get them out. The drains run right into the ocean, but first you have to go through all those rocks and shit to reach the grates at the opposite end.”

“That’s a dangerous area.” She’d been warned more than once by her parents never to go near it because too many people had drowned thinking they could navigate the rip tides, or not realizing how many sharp rocks dotted the beach below the cliffs. The water kept them hidden.

“I know. You remember Santos Augustine, right?”

She nodded. “He’s a police sergeant now.”

“Yep. He got stuck in one of the drains after freeing a trapped teen from it that same night. The Coast Guard in Louisiana and Mississippi were too busy from their own storm damage to send help, and the cops were still trying to recue the other kids.”

  “Holy shit…”

“Yeah. It was a mess. Santos’s sister, Jade, is a sub now to Liam Raleigh and Estevan Durante. Do you remember them?”

She nodded. Estevan was an artist and one of the few Durantes who didn’t work at Phoebe’s Playthings, and Liam ran manufacturing with Nando Durante.

“When one of the detectives called Jade to let her know that Santos was in trouble, Liam and Estevan went into the water with their scuba gear and got him out of the drain.”

She stared at Garrett, not understanding. “Estevan and Liam went under the water, into the ocean, and didn’t die?”

A triumphant smile spread over his face as he nodded. “That’s right. And listen to this. A few days before Christmas, Merrick Durante and Tom Raleigh went over to Little Cove in a speedboat with Irwin Balloux, after Tom’s sister, Nadine, tricked them into thinking Ivy Balloux had taken a package over to the island and was stuck there, injured.”

“What? Is that why Nadine no longer works here?”

  “One of the reasons, yes.”

Nadine had been an assistant vice president of sales, like Javier now was. Her brother, Tom, was head of IT. “Merrick Durante works for JD Construction, right?”

“He’s their project manager, and Owen’s brother.”

She nodded. “Oh, right. Owen is one of the men on trial for setting fires that ruined the project his own company is working on.”

“Yes. Him and an old friend of his, Penn Rosen.”

“That trial won’t last long on this island.”

“Yeah, I agree. Merrick and Tom are Ivy’s Doms now, and in case you don’t remember her, she’s a pilot for her family’s company, Cove Cargo.”

“Sure, I remember her. She was engaged to Scott McMurphy, whose family owns McMurphy Flight. What happened there?”

Garrett chuckled. “Nadine stole him, and they’re engaged now.”

“Holy shit. So the woman who took Ivy’s fiancé turned around and played a trick on Ivy’s Doms? A trick that could have cost both men their lives?”

“Yeah. Great sister she is to Tom. She stole Ivy’s phone and sent them a text message. They panicked, and instead of waiting for the cops, convinced Ivy’s brother to take them over to the little island in a speedboat.”

“But it’s at least five minutes away, over open water, and that’s assuming calm water.”

“No shit. And of course Ivy was never on the island, but Merrick and Tom were fine. No harm to them at all.”

“So why are you all bothering with this meeting? Sounds to me like the curse is gone, if it was ever real at all.”

“There are too many of us who still believe it’s real. We’re going to listen to what Petra has to say, at the very least.”

  “So, you’re going?”

“Yes. Javier and I both are.”

She sat up straight again at the mention of Javier. “Are the two of you still good friends?”

  “The best. That hasn’t changed.”

She caught the emphasis but wasn’t sure which changes he meant. Was he referring to his marriage, or something else? It was difficult not to recall their last conversation before she’d left the island to attend the University of Birmingham, but since he hadn’t mentioned it when she came
back here for an interview, she’d never brought it up. Maybe it was time to do that now so they could clear the air.

It would be the worst kind of embarrassment imaginable if she finally got up the courage to ask him out and discovered he was still upset with her over leaving under such shitty circumstances. “Um, are we okay? You and me, I mean?”

His expression went neutral. “Sure. You do a great job. You’re overqualified to design new restraints, but it’s obvious you’re happy doing it, and I’m glad to have you in the department.”

No one sat close to her, so she wasn’t afraid of being overheard. This department was the smallest one in the company, but they still occupied a space that had been designed when the buildings were brand new and R&D had a lot of work to do. Just the same, Renata leaned forward and lowered her voice. Any excuse to get closer to him.

“I meant on a personal level. We didn’t leave things in a good place all those years ago.” She held her breath as she watched the emotions cross his face. He wasn’t upset. Surely that was a good sign.

  “We were just kids.”

Ouch. “I know, but that’s not an excuse for what I said.”

He averted his gaze. “You didn’t mean it that way.”

“No, I didn’t, but I also had no clue you knew that until right now.” She’d told him that she had big plans, and they didn’t include hanging around this island to watch him rise to the top of some department in the family company, while she was relegated to serving drinks to him and his family members at one of the local bars.

She’d been so full of herself, certain she’d reach fame and glory with her engineering degree. And now here she was, back on the island, working for the man whose heart she’d broken all those years ago. Talk about karma.
